Peanut butter is good for you, and you should be eating it. It has tons of fiber and protein which keeps you fuller longer.
This doesn’t mean all peanut butters are created equal.
Take a look at the ingredients in Peter Pan Peanut Butter:
….and now this Jif Natural Peanut Butter:
Peter pan peanut butter (and most of the others) contain “partially hydrogenated oils”, which are trans-fats (man-made fats that have literally zero nutrition, raise your cholesterol, clog up your arteries, and make you fat, fat, fat.)
To go a step further, a healthier peanut butter choice is organic, since conventionally grown peanuts are covered in pesticides.
My only complaint about organic peanut butter (which happens to be a giant complaint) is that it tastes disgusting. Ok, not disgusting, but not great. It’s still peanut butter, but its not sweet and creamy and super smooth -- it’s dry and it needs to be refrigerated so it’s hard to scoop out and spread, and the oil separation on the top isn’t too appealing. Some people love it, but not me. The solution? Mix it with a little Jif Natural peanut butter. Voila! Sweet delicious peanut butter. When I make my peanut butter ezekiel toast I put a layer of organic peanut butter, then a thin layer of Jif Natural. (Hey, everything counts!)
You have another option called pb2 that’s not organic but contains less sugar than any of the other peanut butters, and zero oils. It also has 85% less calories from fat than regular peanut butter. I have yet to try it, but will eventually. It’s basically powdered peanut butter that you add water to. I’ve actually heard it’s pretty good, and you can buy it on Amazon. Try it and let me know how it is!
Chocolate peanut butter? Yes please.
